A New Mental Health Paradigm
Mental illness is a term that suggests that someone is sick, your thoughts are distorted and their views are wrong. If there was a paradigm shift, where mental illness is considered not a disease or condition, but rather an experience of discomfort, mental anguish and stress is a normal part of life?
The acceptance of "clinical depression" label is considered mood and experience would not have different levels of distress arising from this. We can not say that depression does not exist, but rather see it as a series of moods moving fluid that naturally fluctuate over time and in response to situations. How would the way to treat mental illnesses like depression?
First in this new paradigm, mental illness would not exist. There would be that preferences for how you want to feel and acceptance of non-privileged states of mood (thoughts and emotions / feelings). Therefore, one could learn to enjoy their favorite mental states (and emotions) when they occur, and accept as normal the most unpleasant mental states (and feelings). It would create resistance preson, and thus help them gain a psychological buffer to be depressed depressed.
Secondly, a mental illness can not be treated with the drug as there would be no need. Mental illness must be understood in a certain state of mind, which is changing the intensity and the business cycle. Just like the seasons in character, mood changes, for example, seasonal depression (or seasonal affective disorder). So we were aware of the method used for the understanding of depression and, in turn, know that depression is impermanent, changing from moment to moment and can not continue indefinitely. This would help to accept the unexplainable feelings that a person can not find the triggers (for example: "Why do I feel depressed when I have a good job, a beautiful wife and care, are financially secure, and have two healthy children?"
Mental illness would be dealt with through education and practice. Awareness of thoughts as thoughts and feelings as feelings, neither good nor bad to be in the treatment center. There would be no debate on trying to stop the thoughts that we would learn flexibility in how you hold thoughts that are wondering "is this idea for me?" If the answer is yes, we want to act on that thought, but if the answer is no, we could recognize as being just thought an idea and leave it there, without appeal. This practice note could be used with all mental illnesses, because it does not judge anyone thought was disorganized, dysfunctional, abnormal, strange or weird.
This new paradigm also means not accept others for who they are and not assume that you are wrong in their thinking, why is not responsible for their own vision. Perhaps this is the biggest challenge for us all.
